Eagles Wide Receivers

There’s a troubling situation in Philadelphia right now. It has nothing to do with Andy Reid’s job or the Eagles win total though. It’s all about which Eagles wide receivers are better weekly fantasy football starters. Clearly Desean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin are the top two but would you believe that Brent Celek has more yards receiving than Maclin? You should because it’s true; the tight end has out produced the first round star wide receiver. Maclin did miss a little bit of time due to injury but that’s just the natural state of the Eagles at this point. If one’s not inured then the other surely is.

Still the question remains: which is a better start in weekly fantasy football leagues? In the interest of clearing things up it should be noted that Maclin runs routes that a traditional number one receiver would. Even in Reid’s funky version of the west coast offense there’s still a need for a big fast receiver that can run in a straight line. Jackson plays more like a slot receiver. He catches deep passes too but when both are in the game Jackson runs the under and Maclin the over. So why then does Jackson have more yards? The easiest answer is that the Eagles are just a weird team and what transpires in Philadelphia doesn’t have much to do with reality.

They throw the screen pass religiously and deep bombs are as rare as Haley’s comet but there’s always passes to go around. Maclin makes up for the yardage deficit by catching more touchdowns. He’s currently slightly more highly rated than Jackson in weekly fantasy football because he holds a 3-1 edge over him in touchdowns. That’s why Maclin is a better start on any given weekend. He has the speed to get to the red zone and he has the size to score once he gets there.
